High consumption of added sugars (caloric sweeteners) has been linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Sugars added in the processing of or preparation of foods and beverages to the US diet increased throughout the mid 90's but has slowly declined since then. Although the consumption of sugars has decreased, due to factors such as reduced soda consumption, intakes continue to exceed well beyond the recommended limits.
